Is there a relationship any fonder than that of Mama and Baby? After all, it is in our DNA to have a natural bond with our kin. Yet, it’s natural for our little ones to grow up…and it’s our job to help them get there.
I felt it was crucial to develop the proper Mama and Baby characters for my children’s book so that this overall theme was clear. I am pleased to share with you the concept sketches for the characters of My Littlest Spoon.
Meet Aspen the sloth. She is a young and tentative sloth baby with a curiosity that challenges her to face her fear of leaving the comfort of her mother’s touch. Sloths live a slow and comfortable lifestyle, and for Aspen, this also means spooning with her Mama. In fact, the two even share a song that they sing before bed every night. Will Aspen ever be ready to sleep without her mother’s spoon? With her Mama’s guidance and pure tenacity…she just might get there!
Meet Aspen’s gentle Mama. She adores snuggling and singing with her precious Aspen. Although always there to support her baby, she also aids in Aspen discovering her independence. Still, she will always be ready to catch her, if she should fall.
Together, these tender sloth characters are the heart of My Littlest Spoon.
Why Sloth Characters?
Sloths are naturally gentle, carefree creatures. I wanted to highlight Aspen’s complacency within this slow lifestyle. Separation anxiety in young children is natural, and I felt like a sloth’s relationship with its mother highlighted this. Mom and baby sloths tend to spend most of their time snuggling, whereas other species have far more adventurous young. Also, what better animal could I find to highlight the action of spooning together?!
Why is there no father sloth?
Originally, I had a father figure sloth in the story; However, the story had a deeper meaning when focusing on the Mama and Baby concept in particular. Also, father sloths aren’t involved in the raising of the sloth babies. Because I want this book to be educational, I don’t want to provide any inaccurate information on sloths as a whole…even if for the sake of fiction.
